Bowman Gray Stadium – Modified Twin 50’s

Bowman Gray Stadium was a fan’s dream this Saturday night. Again a NASCAR Hall of Fame member was in the house, but this time he strapped himself in a racing seat and went to battle with the best drivers the stadium has to offer. A popular Sportsman regular joined him, also making his first appearance in stadium mods, but the parity was glaringly apparent. The legend versus the young up coming rookie. And, if you were looking for a better adventure in the Sportsman field anywhere else in the country Saturday evening, you wouldn’t find it. From the feature, to the special added event at the end of the night, the competition was intense.

Bowman Gray Modified Twin 50’s – Race 1

Brad’s Golf Cars Modified series

Lee Jeffreys is fastest in qualifying for the 5th time this season, as he takes the pole for the Twin 50’s, with a lap of 13.326. But, as many of the feature races are at the madhouse, he will have to stand on the luck of the draw, as do the rest of the top 6 qualifiers. [ Lee, you’ve done it again and posted the fastest lap in qualifying tonight. But again, the cone comes into play for double file restarts all night. Do you play it safe, or go for broke to get the win tonight? “Well, we drew 6th…we haven’t been real lucky in the draws this year. We’re gonna have to go hard if we want to win tonight.”

Third fastest qualifier in his first modified race at the stadium, is John Holleman IV (69). And after the draw, he is the lucky recipient of the number one chip, putting him on the pole for the first of the twin features tonight. If he wanted an opportunity to show the best racers in the Bowman Gray mods what he can do, he couldn’t have asked for a better scenario. Brandon Ward (04) will start to his outside. 3rd will be Chris Fleming (16), and Tim Brown (83) starts 4th, accomplishing his goal of qualifying and drawing ahead of the point leader, Burt Myers (1). Hall Of Fame member Bobby Labonte, in his first start in an open wheel car, and his first appearance at the stadium starts 7th with a qualifying lap of 13.596.

Holleman gets a great start, but on lap 2, the first caution is out for the 75 of Jeffreys, as he is in the fence in turn 2. Tough luck for the fastest qualifier as he is towed away to the pits. Holleman will lead the restart, but Ward, Tim Brown, Bohn, and Butner try their luck early and take the cone to the outside. Ward takes the lead on the outside on the restart, but the caution soon waves again for the 78 of Jody Fritts, who exited the pits, but is slow down the front stretch. Your leaders are Ward, Holleman, Tim Brown, and Chris Fleming. Taking their chance with the cone on restart 2 is Holleman, Fleming, Bohn, and Daniel Beeson (44). Bobby Labonte is holding his own in 10th, losing a few spots on the cone restarts.

On the restart, Ward holds position, and Fleming battles into 2nd. Tim Brown starts to pressure Holleman for third, as he also tries holding off the charging Burt Myers, as Ward and Fleming take advantage and pull away. On lap 20, Labonte goes around on his own, bringing out another caution, and he has to go to the rear of the field. It’s Ward, Fleming, Holleman, and Tim Brown up front, and taking the cone on this round is Fleming, as he takes his chance on trying to wrestle away the top spot, followed by Tim Brown and Danny Bohn. Ward holds on however, and Holleman starts to pressure Fleming for 2nd, and he gets by on lap 22, and starts to make his way to the leader. If anyone thought the rookie was going to go away, they were sadly mistaken, as Holleman is so far having a great race up in the front of the field. Lap 29 the caution comes out again for debris, and so with about 20 to go, the cone double file restart is going to be interesting to say the least. And taking their chances with the cone at this point will be Holleman, Tim Brown, Bohn, and Jason Myers, who is doing all he can to find a spot among the leaders. Ward gets another great start and Holleman falls in behind him in 2nd, but the caution flies yet again, as the 81 of Zack Clifton, and the 18 of Daniel Yates get together. Taking advantage of the on track situation, Jonathan Brown (22), who had to start in the back of the pack because he missed qualifying due to mechanical troubles earlier in the day, moves into 7th behind Burt Myers, while Labonte moves into 12th trying to find his way back through the field. Ward will lead them back on the restart, but the cone becomes an even bigger factor, as Holleman, Tim Brown, and the Myers brothers take their chance on gaining all they can. Ward holds them off once again, but Holleman also holds onto 2nd, as Fleming and Tim Brown settle in behind him. On lap 35, John Smith (53) has car troubles, and the caution waves once more. The leaders have run a good competitive race so far, and with 15 laps to go, everyone’s going to step up their game even more to insure they secure themselves a good finish. Ward still at point, but Holleman again elects to go outside and challenge him for that top spot. Behind Holleman taking the cone is Tim Brown, Danny Bohn, and Jonathan Brown, all ready to take all they can get. And as they go back green, Holleman holds his ground on the outside. Ward is doing all he can to keep the lead, but Holleman won’t go away, and on lap 37 he clears Ward for the lead. Tim Brown has found his way to 3rd, Fleming holds on to 4th, and point leader Burt Myers is in the top 5. Ward has not fallen off of Holleman, and he’s letting him know he’s still there. He’s trying to get the rookie to make a mistake. Holleman pushes a little in the middle of 3 and 4 and Ward gets into him and the 69 goes around in 1 and 2. The crowd is deafening as this place has erupted. Fleming sits in the fence and Danny Bohn and Burt Myers are both caught up in the incident. Meanwhile, Bobby Labonte has quietly moved himself back into the top 10, and Jonathan Brown has come from the back to 3rd. Tim Brown has come through clean and sits in the 2nd spot. Jason Myers is 4th, and Civali (79) 5th. On the restart, there will be only about 8 laps to decide it. And with what will probably be his last chance, Tim Brown goes to the outside of the cone to take a shot at the lead over Ward and Jason Myers follows him. On the final restart Tim Brown fights hard to get the lead from the outside, but Ward hold him off and takes the win in the first 50 lap race for the modifieds. Jonathan Brown comes home 3rd, Jason Myers 4th, and James Civali rounding out the top 5. Bobby Labonte finishes in the top 10, and pole sitter John Holleman IV runs great early but has to settle for 16th. Surely not the finish he wanted, but he did make his presence known, and they all have another shot in race 2.

Bowman Gray Modified Twin 50’s – Race 2

After his win in race 1, Brandon Ward had to draw a number for his starting spot in race 2 per Madhouse Scramble rules. It wasn’t favorable, as he draws the number 16. That puts the 16th place finisher, rookie Drew Moffitt (51) on the pole for race 2. And all the leaders from race 1 will have a lot of traffic to contend with if they want to make it back to the front in the second race. Moffitt is followed by John Smith (53) 2nd, Danny Bohn (65) 3rd, and Darin Redmon (8) will line up 4th. Bobby Labonte (36) finds himself where he started the night rolling off 7th.

On the start, Smith takes the lead and Danny Bohn follows him while Moffitt settles in 3rd. On lap 4 the first caution waves after Zack Clifton (81) gets into Redmon and causes him to spin around. Labonte was losing spots and he’s fallen back to 12th. It seems he may be developing a problem on the number 36 Alliance Insurance Services machine. Smith is your leader, with Bohn, Moffitt, and Clifton trailing. Bohn will take his shot at Smith as he takes the cone, and following him to the outside is Daniel Beeson (44), Randy Butner (5), and points leader Burt Myers, who is looking to gain points following his 8th place finish in the first race. On the restart, Bohn hangs on the outside of Smith, and then moves by him into the lead. Moffitt secures 3rd, and James Civali (79) gains several spots and finds his way to 4th, and then on lap 9, he takes 3rd from Beeson. On the next lap, Bobby Labonte goes around on the edge of the infield on the front stretch, creating a perfect ribbon pattern in the grass I might add, and re enters the track with no caution. It’s clear something has gone amiss with that car, and sure enough, 10 laps in, he takes it to the pits, and is done for the night with mechanical issues. The caution waves as well for fluid on the track.

For the restart, Smith has taken the cone to try and reclaim the lead from Bohn, and also taking the cone behind him, are the hard charging Jonathan Brown, and John Holleman IV who are looking for more spots after working their way through the field. As they go green Brown moves into 2nd, and then the lead as he overtakes both the 53 and 65 machines, but Bohn doesn’t let him fully clear him and fights back on the outside, just nosing himself ahead as the caution comes out for a huge pile up on lap 12. Numerous cars involved including Chris Williams (41), Bobo Brown (2), and Lee Jeffreys (77 as he uses back up car after his first race crash) who runs out of luck again in race 2. Points leader Burt Myers hasn’t made up much ground, but Tim Brown has to pit and will have to restart at the tail end of the field. Bohn will lead the start with Jonathan Brown, James Civali, and John Smith 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. But Jonathan Brown will use the cone to line up outside leader Bohn to take a shot at the front, and Smith follows him to the outside. On the start, Jonathan Brown powers to the lead as Smith goes around trying to clear for 3rd, and brings out yet another caution. Jonathan Brown, after coming from the back to 3rd in race 1, is now your leader in race 2 after yet again another unfavorable starting spot. Bohn is 2nd, and Civali 3rd. For the start, Bohn chooses to take the cone, followed by Randy Butner (5), and John Holleman, who is still looking for his way to the front of the field. The green is out, and Holleman this time is able to take advantage of the outside lane, and finds himself cleared for 3rd behind leader Jonathan Brown, and 2nd place running Danny Bohn. He starts to work on Bohn for 2nd, but the caution is out again, this time for Civali who has mechanical trouble. And the cone makes yet another appearance. Bohn will again try his luck on the outside of Jonathan Brown, and Butner goes outside as well, as does Burt Myers. The green is out and again Jonathan Brown holds off Danny Bohn for the top spot, as Burt Myers clears in 5th. But on lap 19, Tim Brown goes around and the caution is out again. The running order before the cone is placed is Jonathan Brown, Danny Bohn, John Holleman IV, Randy Butner, and Burt Myers completes the top 5. The cone is down, and again Bohn will try his luck outside of Jonathan. Randy Butner also takes the cone to the outside again, and this time he is followed by Chris Fleming (76 as Fleming also has switched to his back up car) in his bid to the front. On the restart, Butner gets by Holleman, as Bohn runs side by side with Jonathan Brown. They run 2 wide for several laps before Jonathan Brown is finally able to clear the 65. Chris Fleming gets under Holleman for 4th, but he gets loose and jams up Burt Myers and Tim Brown, and Burt then starts looking on Fleming for 5th. Holleman got the message from Fleming though, and he closes in on Butner and starts tapping on his bumper to let him know he’s there. On lap 38, the final caution flies for debris. One last chance to take advantage of an appearance from the lovable orange cone. And Bohn decides to take one more shot from the outside on Jonathan Brown. Holleman lines up outside of Butner, and Burt Myers lines up outside of Fleming. The green is out for the final time, and Jonathan Brown gets a great start, as Bohn will have to settle for 2nd. Holleman drives around Butner for 3rd, and Fleming keeps Burt Myers behind him to claim 5th. And that’s how they finish, as Jonathan Brown drives away and takes a remarkable win in race 2 of the Bowman Gray Modified Twin 50’s. [Jonathan, how big is this win to you personally after all that has happened these last few weeks? “I don’t believe it. I just don’t believe it. We’ve been working on it for 2 weeks, and we finally got it back together, and when we tested the engine this morning, we had a problem. We asked for some expert advice, and so many great people reached out to us. And at 4pm, we got our answer. We got it fixed, left the tires that were on it, and loaded it on the rollback to get it to the stadium. We barely got her back here on time. No practice. Whatever tires that were on it are gone. But here we are…and…I just don’t believe it.”] I also caught up with NASCAR Hall Of fame member Bobby Labonte~ [Bobby, your career speaks for itself, so I only have one question for you, and I think it’s what’s most important tonight…Did you have fun? (Bobby smiles)”I did! These guys are good! Really good racers, and I enjoyed it. We had a great time.”] I also went and talked to 3rd place finisher John Holleman IV about his first starts in a modified at the stadium~ [ John, was it all you expected it to be? “It was more than I expected. We came out here tonight to just run all the laps and finish. I thought I was going to get a little better finish in the first one there (John Laughs), but hey, you know…that’s racing here. I think we showed ’em we can run with them and overall it was a great night for us.” Is this a preview for next year? “Well, we want to. But we need to get some more sponsorship to do it. These cars are very expensive. But we’re looking, and hope we can work it out.” I also caught up to 2014 Bowman Gray modified champ Danny Bohn to ask him about making his first NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series start this October at Martinsville Speedway ~ [Danny, congratulations on your second place finish in the second mod race tonight. But I wanted to ask you how excited you are to make your first truck start for On Point Motorsports at Martinsville this coming October. “It’s definitely exciting. I’ve always wanted to get the opportunity to run in one of the top 3 series in NASCAR, and I had almost given up on it. But things worked out for me to make this start. They’re a good team, and I’m really looking forward to it, and hope I can get these guys a good finish.”

McDowell Heating And Air Sportsman Series – Race 1

Random draw sets the field for the first 20 lap Sportsman race, and Tommy Neal (21) will be your pole sitter. He’s been real strong this year, and this close to the end of the season, with crucial points on the line, he is definitely going to be hard to beat tonight from the pole. Rolling off 2nd is Zack Ore (55), 3rd Kevin Neal (07), 4th Blake Shupe (30), and points leader Justin Taylor (12) will line up 5th. On the start, Tommy Neal clears Ore for the lead, and Kevin Neal gets by Ore for 2nd. But in turn 2, the 19 of Michael Adams has got together with the 03 of Sterling Plemmons, and Adams car is resting on top of Plemmons’s hood. Both Sportsman races will have single file restarts, and as they line up to go back green it’s Tommy Neal, followed by Nephew Kevin Neal, Ore, and Taylor. On the restart, Taylor gets by Ore, and then the 22 of Wesley Thompson gets by Ore for 4th. The caution waves the second time for debris, saving Ore from losing more spots, but it’s obvious the 55 machine is having some issues. Back to green, it’s Neal, Neal, Taylor, and Thompson, as the 92 of Kyle Southern gets by Ore for 5th, and Ore, stuck on the outside, will fall all the way to the rear of the field. Dylan Ward (7) enters the top 5 getting by Southern, and on lap 17, the caution is out again for Michael Caudill (17) as he gets loose and spins. Up front, it’s still Neal, Neal, Taylor, Thompson, and Ward. On the restart, Ward gets by Thompson for 4th, and then Thompson spins with 5 to go. Retsart line up is Neal, Neal, Taylor, Ward, and Amber Lynn (2) moves to 5th. As they go green, Tommy Neal gets a good restart, bur Kevin Neal is under heavy pressure from Taylor who is trying to get Kevin up a groove so he can get under him. Kevin tries to block but Taylor’s there and he gives Kevin a shove, and the 07 is around. Tommy Neal will lead them back with only a few laps remaining, and now he will have Taylor, Lynn, and Shupe in his rear view, as Dylan Ward has to pit for damage as his hood is flying up from contact from the Kevin Neal spin. As the green falls again, Taylor is looking on Neal, but Shupe goes around bringing out the caution yet again. It’s getting really dicey up front, and a lot of rear bumpers are being tested for durability. Up front as the green falls once more, Taylor is again looking on Neal for the lead, but he now has Lynn breathing down his neck as she is looking to get in on the lead battle, but they all 3 get bunched up together and with just a couple laps left, Lynn goes around. It’s going to be a shoot out for the win, but with the single file restart, Tommy Neal holds off point leader Justin Taylor, with Southern moving back up to 3rd, Mitch Gales (38) 4th, and Michael Adams 5th.

McDowell Heating And Air Sportsman Series – Race 2

Madhouse scramble rules are in effect in Race 2 for the Bowman Gray Sportsman, and the scramble will not be kind tonight. Brandon Ward drew the number 16 after the first mod race, and Tommy Neal doesn’t do much better, drawing the number 14 after the first Sportsman race, so he will start 14th. Amber Lynn who finished 14th after her late race spin in the first race will sit on the pole for race 2. Kevin Neal starts 2nd, Wesley Thompson 3rd, and Dylan Ward 4th. As the green is out to start the race, Lynn gets a bad start, and Kevin Neal slips by for the lead while Ward moves past Thompson for 3rd. 6 laps in, Neal has a sizable lead over Lynn, as she fights off Ward, But the caution comes out for the 38 of Mitch Gales as he is around in turn 3. On the start Neal holds off Lynn and Ward, but caution comes out again for debris. As the green comes back out, Lynn gets a better start on Neal, and she starts to go to work. It takes a few laps but she gets by to take the point, and she brings Ward with her. On lap 13, Tommy Neal gets into nephew Kevin, and Kevin spins bringing out the final caution of the race. The line up up front for the restart is Lynn, Ward, Tommy Neal, Michael Adams, and Justin Taylor who again finds his way to the top 5. As they go back green for the final time, Ward is really putting the pressure on Lynn as Taylor gets by Adams for 4th. Taylor reels in the leaders, as Ward is getting Lynn sideways off every corner, but she continues to hold him off. Ward does all he can to rattle her, but Amber keeps it together, and wins race 2. Points leader Justin Taylor achieves his goal for the night of padding his point lead with 2 top 5 finishes on the night, and barring a catastrophe in the final weekend of the year, should be your 2019 champion. To early to call it yet however, as this is The Madhouse, and anything can and will happen on any given Saturday. [Amber, you have won 2 weeks in a row to get your 3rd win. Are you going to get 4 and win for the 3rd straight week next Saturday night? “We’re going to try. We’re gonna do all we can to get 4. I think Ward has us all for top gun, but I like to be on the top of that list for wins this year. My team has worked hard, and I would love nothing more than get them back to victory lane one more time this year.”

Law Offices of John Barrow Street Stock Series

The street stocks also will start on the luck of the draw, and number 1 Christian Joyce also pulls out a 1, and will start on the point, followed by Billy Gregg (98), Brian Rose (3), and points leader Jacob Creed (08) 4th. Joyce will lead lap 1, but Gregg is there and it takes him only one more lap to wrestle away the lead. Caution 1 flies after David Creed (02) and Nate Gregg (28) get together, and Jeremy Warren (97) and Kevin Gilbert (13) get caught up in it. Gregg gets a good start as they go back green, and Jacob Creed gets by Joyce for 2nd. The 6 of Austin Powell goes around bringing out another caution after he gets a shot from Gerald Robinson Jr. (69). It’s Billy Gregg, Jacob Creed, Joyce and Brian Wall (22) leading on the restart, but Joyce gets into the back stretch fence and has a tire going down. Gregg this time leads Creed, Wall, and Corey Rose (19) who has moved into the top 5 to the green, as points leader Jeremy Warren (97) moves up to 7th. But then Corey Rose spins from 4th. And as the yellow comes out, Billy Gregg is hit hard from behind by Jacob Creed, and has sheet metal damage to the rear of his car. The track officials take a good look, but Billy’s luck holds up and the let him continue without a trip to the pits. On the green flag restart, it’s Gregg, Creed, Wall, and Bryan Sykes (99) as he moves into the top 4th to challenge the leaders up front. Sykes is working over Wall for 3rd, but Taylor Robbins (40) is around in turn 3 for the final caution. On the final restart, Gregg is being challenged for the lead by Jacob Creed, and Wall is under attack from Sykes. Sykes moves to 3rd, but Billy Gregg holds off Jacob Creed for the win. Points leader Jeremy Warren finishes 6th and has a good finish, but points contenders Jacob Creed and Billy Gregg are still able to slice at his lead.

Q104.1 Stadium Stock Series – A Division

Another tight points race with tonight being the last night before the finale means the points leaders will have to be on top of their game if they want a shot at the title. D.J. Dean (33) will start 1st, followed by Luke Smith (80) 2nd, Cody Gum (03) 3rd, and A.J. Sanders rolling off 4th. Tyler Bush (68) goes around on the start, and we’ll have to try again for a clean start, but shortly after the restart, the rear spindle comes out from under the 43 machine of Brendon Brendle. This may be his elimination from the points race, as this is indeed going to be costly. Dean leads Smith on the start as Sanders and points leader Chuck Wall go 3 wide with the 47 of Tyler McDonald for 3rd and 4th. Wall wants more and takes it from Smith as he looks for the front. On lap 5 he finds it and takes the lead. Meanwhile, Grayson Keaton is also moving up through the field and into 2nd as he sets his sight on the leader. Wall is too strong however and goes on to win and add to his slim point lead going into the final weekend. Keaton 2nd, Sanders 3rd, Tyler McDonald 4th and Junior Snow (51) round out your top 5.

Q104.1 Stadium Stock Series B Division

On the final weekend, the Bowman Gray Stadium Stocks will only run 1 race for the top 26 in points. So pressure is on the B division drivers who have to have a good race tonight in order to start next week. Josh Osbourne (37) will start on the point, followed by Jason Everhart (2) 2nd, Justin Emory (95) 3rd, and Dwayne Bryant (15) starting 4th. As expected, it’s a wildly competitive race, with many comers and goes up front, but when the dust settled, it’s Daryl Bryant (00) taking the win. Josh Osborne (37) 2nd, David Hopkins (10) 3rd, Junior Smith (79) 4th, and Kyler Staley (31) 5th.
