Chris Ferguson Wins Bristol Dirt Nationals Opener Sets Sights on WoO Rock Gault Memorial Mega Payday

By Ben Shelton

MT. HOLLY, N.C. (03/24/21) – Chris Ferguson officially scratched an achievement off the bucket list on Friday night. The driver known as “Fergy” piloted his Diff-Tran Machining No. 22 K and K Trucking/ Live Oak Aesthetic and Family Dentistry Super Late Model to a victory at the famed Bristol Motor Speedway.

The triumph was worth $10,000 and came during the opening round of the inaugural Karl Kustoms Bristol Dirt Nationals at the hallowed, ½-mile oval.

“This is crazy,” Ferguson said to a DirtOnDirt.com reporter shortly after leaving the Bristol Motor Speedway victory lane stage. “I was 10 or 12 years old whenever they had this race (in 2001) and I was up in the stands watching Scott pass Freddy Smith on the last lap for the win here. It just seems so far away to make it to this point in my career, but here we are.

“I think every year we get a little bit closer to the top of the sport. Last year we kind of turned the page winning some big races. This is the biggest stage of the year so far. Hopefully, this kind of launches us into a spot where we’re considered one of the best. Everybody says you hit your prime after your 30s in Dirt Late Models. Maybe this is my time.”

Chris Ferguson invaded the famed Bristol Motor Speedway (Bristol, Tenn.) on Friday afternoon to kick off the two-day Karl Kustoms Bristol Dirt Nationals.

Against a field of 55 Super Late Models, Ferguson laid down the fastest lap in his time trial group before picking up an eight-lap heat race victory. Earning the pole position for the opening night feature, Chris shot into the lead on the opening lap and never looked back, leading flag-to-flag in the 25-lap affair to capture his first win of the season and a $10,000 prize. He took the checkers ahead of Kyle Larson, Jonathan Davenport, Scott Bloomquist, and Chris Madden.

On Saturday afternoon, Chris followed up the fastest lap in field of 49 cars with a heat race win over Bobby Pierce. Locked into the pole for the $50,000-to-win Bristol Dirt Nationals finale, Ferguson paced the field for the first 10 circuits until Kyle Larson snuck by on the 11th lap. Fading outside the Top-5 late in the 50-lapper, Chris Ferguson landed a seventh-place finish when the checkered flag flew.

This weekend, Chris Ferguson returns to familiar territory as he sets his sights on a career payday. The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will sanction the Rock Gault Memorial at Cherokee Speedway (Gaffney, S.C.). The weekend opens with the field split into twin $5,000-to-win programs on Friday night, while Saturday’s program boasts a $40,000 top prize.
