Governor's Cup Preview

With the 54th Annual Florida Governor’s Cup just days away only one former winner has entered the race. Naturally that puts last years winner, Jeff Choquette at the top of the favorites list. Choquette was the big winner just a few weeks ago in the Hart to Heart 100 giving him a ton of momentum going into this weekend. Gio Bromante may be making just his second Super Late Model start at New Smyrna, but he is coming off a strong 3rd place run a few weeks ago in the Hart to Heart 100 and had a strong season on the Southern Super Series Tour as well. Stephen Nasse has won a number of big races but the Florida Governor’s Cup is one of the crown jewels that still eludes him. Nasse is expected to be a huge threat this weekend. And of course, you can not count out Bubba Pollard who will be driving the legendary TM Ranch number 11 for David Rogers this weekend. Pollard is considered one of the best short track drivers in America and won the Super Late Model Speedweeks Championship here in February. will he might finally be able to finally put this race on his already impressive resume? Are these the favorites to win this years Governors Cup?

Local Stars:

A few of our local stars will be looking to defend their home turf and take home the biggest wins of their New Smyrna Speedway careers! Fresh off the track championship, Brad May looks to take home his first Governor’s cup ring! Anthony Sergi will be looking to avenge a near miss in last years running of the Gov. Cup and finally get that elusive victory. Doug Elliott may be considered an under dog but he has plenty of experience on the high banks and would be a very popular addition to the winners list.

Out of Towners:

A big race like this would not be complete with some big names comming from out of town. John DeAngelis from Jackson, WI has decided to make his first trip South for the Florid Governor’s Cup. DeAngelis has been a front runner in the Mid West region and will a be fun driver to follow this weekend on the high banks. Brandon Herbert, who normally comes down from Georgia for Speedweeks has decided to give the Governor’s Cup a shot this year, He will be joined by fellow Georgia driver, Kyle Sieg who ran here in last months Hart to Heart 100. Maybe this last driver should be moved to the contenders section. Plover, Wisconsin’s Gabe Sommers finished second in Super Late Model competition during Speedweeks and will be looking to upset the veterans this weekend. How will these out of towners fare? We will find out after 200 laps of intense action this Saturday Night.

Wild Cards:

Ever year there are a handful of wild card drivers on the entry list and there a quite a few this year. One of those is Groveland’s Jett Noland. Noland has shown flashes of brilliance in his young Late Model career. He almost won his first feature earlier his year and if he can find some speed and keep his car in one piece he may be this years big surprise! Larry Blount has entered his number 21 car with driver Jeremy Pate who started dead last in the Hart to Heart 100 a few weeks ago and rallied to finish 1oth. With the right adjustments this weekend, this team could be a contender. Returning to New Smyrna Speedway for the first time in a few years is the 00 for Anthony Cataldi. Cataldi has been running legends cars most of the year but is looking to make an impact in his return to super late model racing at NSS. He is a former Bright House Challenge Series champ, so he knows how to get the job done. These “Wild cards’ might just be contenders when the checkers fly on Saturday night.

Of course, anyone on the entry list could end up in Hampton Inn Victory Lane on Saturday night and we wont know until the drop of the Checkered Flag falls on the 54th Florida Governor’s Cup! The action kicks off with practice day on Thursday November 7th from 4PM to 10PM. The Prelude to the Cup kicks off the racing action on Friday, November 8th at 7:30PM. The Pro Late Models and Modifieds will run 50 laps each, with the Super Stocks and Bombers running 25 and 20 lap features respectively that night. The 200 lap Super Late Model Florida Govonor’s Cup is scheduled for Saturday, November 8th along with the American Auto Sportsman 50, Pro Truck Challenge Series 50 and Mod Mini 25! Its going to be a spectacular weekend of racing and we hope to see you all there.
