K1 Speed go-kart racing coming to Jackson Township

JACKSON TWP. An electric go-kart attraction could open in Jackson Township as early as next summer.

James Burley, owner of K1 Speed Canton, said he hopes to have bank funding approved by Dec. 31 for the site north of Shuffel Street NW and west of Port Jackson Avenue NW.

“We’ve got architectural drawings being made right now, so we hope to have it open by August next year,” Burley said.

The Stark County Regional Planning Commission this week gave the franchise conditional approval for a 45,000-square-foot building and parking lot. Planning documents show site plans are by Hettler Engineering LLC and the property is leased from the Akron Canton Regional Airport Authority.

Burley, a graduate of Jackson High School and the University of Akron, said locating near the Center Ice Sports Complex provides a complementary entertainment venue.

“Racing’s a passion of mine, and this is a good business opportunity for me, so I wanted it to be local,” he said.

K1 Speed has more than 40 locations worldwide but none in Ohio, according to the company’s website. In addition to go-karts, the centers have arcade and table games, as well as food and beverages.

Burley said K1 Speed centers cater to competitive racers, casual users and corporate events. The vehicles are “high-performance” and have a maximum speed of 45 mph.

“So, they’re not the go-karts that you’d go to like Slugger & Putters to drive,” he said.

Each indoor track is designed for its own space and typically is less than a quarter-mile — providing a 20- to 30-second lap time. Burley said 12 drivers can be on the track at a time.

There also will be an outdoor portion.

“So you’ll be able to drive indoors, go out a door and go right outside, back in,” Burley said.
