JIM KULSETH, CHAD FERGE, TYLER KALATA/MIKE HELBACH, GARY HAARKLAU, EARN FEATURE WINS!

Marshfield, WI, (August 17, 2019) – Back to school night provided many thrills for the fans here tonight, at Marshfield Motor Speedway. With a great night for auto racing, fans enjoyed 5-divisions of action packed racing fun!

The CWRA Stars to Legends Tour as presented by Smiley’s Old Time Diner, made their latest stop at Marshfield Motor Speedway, Marshfield, WI., here Saturday night, and in a dominating performance, Tour point leader, Jeff Weinfurter, Wis. Rapids, WI., won both 30 lap Feature events. With the wins, Weinfurter all but assured himself of the season points Crown with one event left at Golden Sands Speedway, Friday night, August 23rd.

The first 30 lap Feature found Greg Matthews, Wis. Rapids, WI., and Mike Sievers, Wis. Rapids, WI., on the front row. Sievers jumped out to the early lead with the 23 car field in hot pursuit. Weinfurter, from his 3rd row starting spot, wasn’t wasting any time however as he roared past Sievers by lap 5. A caution flag slowed action, but Weinfurter with the double file restart immediately assumed command. Nick Roehl, Fon Du Lac, WI., grabbed the 3rd position and was working over Sievers for 2nd. Bentley Trucking Fast Qualifier Chad Butz, Green Bay, WI., was slicing through the field from his 15th starting position, moving into the 3rd spot by lap 12. Weinfurter’s lead had expanded by 7 car lengths, but Butz was closing the gap after racing into 2nd. Darek Gress, Neillsville, WI., was another driver on the move grabbing the 3rd position by lap 16. Without the aid of any additional slowdowns, Weinfurter increased his lead and crossed the finish line 8 car lengths ahead of Gress, who just nipped Butz for 2nd at the start finish line. Rounding out the top finishers were Roehl, Mark Mackesy, Wausau, WI., and Travis Volm, Mosinee, WI.

The second 30 lap Feature was inverted 65% from the 1st one, which put Frank Nitzke, Berlin, WI., and Putch Bentley, Iron River, MI., on the front row. The two battled side by side for the first 4 laps before Bentley moved out to a slight lead. Darren Jackson, Wis. Rapids, WI., and Volm made up the 3rd and 4th positions racing nose to tail with the two leaders. The caution flew on lap 10 for a Mark Mackesy excursion off the back stretch into the light standard, which ended his night.

Once green flag racing resumed, it was again Bentley and Nitzke battling. They had company however, as no less than 8 cars were in the thick of the battle for the top spot. Volm with an outside maneuver took the 2nd position, and within a 1/2 lap motored into the lead past Bentley. 1st 30 lap Feature winner, Weinfurter was inching toward the front, up to 4th position with 15 laps remaining. Butz had just passed Bentley for 2nd position and was rapidly closing on leader Volm. Butz got to the inside of Volm, and appeared to have the fastest car, but could only draw even with the leader which is the way the raced for the next 12 laps. Weinfurter, with nowhere to go settled into 3rd, waiting for the opportunity to pounce on the two leaders. That chance came heading into the 3rd turn of the last lap, as both Volm and Butz drifted a bit high, allowing Weinfurter just enough space on the inside to take the lead and eventual win. In a near photo finish, Weinfurter edged Butz for 1st, with Volm right behind. Rounding out the top finishers, were Jackson, Harley Jankowski, Sparta, WI., and Nick Roehl.

The Upper Midwest Vintage Racing Series visited the speedway today, and brought back many memories of yesteryear! Once the Vintage cars took to the track for their respective heats, it was Brian Lee edging Kenny Baum in heat one. In the second heat, it was Greg Cottone out motoring Todd Korrish to the finish line.
Once the UMVRS Vintage cars took to the track for their feature, it was Ralph Cottone leading the field to the green flag. Cottone would hold the race lead until lap three. That was when Brian Lee made an outside pass of Cottone for the race lead. After Lee led for three laps, Greg Cottone moved his 1968 Chevelle to the top spot. With two laps remaining, Jim Kulseth put his Ford Mustang in the top spot with the pass of Greg Cottone. Kulseth, who calls Rosemount, MN home, went on to the Vintage feature win. Todd Korrish came home in the runner up position, with Greg Cottone finishing third. Kenny Baum and Pat Echlin rounded out the top five.
