MOORESVILLE, N.C. (March 22, 2021) – JR Motorsports Late Model driver William Cox III went toe-to-toe with the best the CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car Series had to offer Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway, qualifying ninth and finishing eighth in the 150-lap main event on the .363-mile speedway.

The 15-year-old driver put his No. 88 Capital Chevrolet/Sokal Media Group Chevrolet on the inside of the fifth row for the extra-distance event and, when the green flag waved on the initial start, found his way to the top side, running two-abreast for the first 40 laps. Eventually, the field shook out into single-file running and Cox began to pick off the cars ahead of him.

The first caution flag waved at around lap 90, with Cox solidly in the top 10, and the young driver advanced as high as sixth in the order through a couple more caution flags. One of them caught leader Mike Looney out when another car slid up in front of him at lap 110, destroying the nose of his machine.

Cox’s No. 88 Chevrolet fared well on long runs, and the young driver kept the pressure on through the race. A late caution stacked the field two-wide near the end and Cox used the top lane to come home eighth.

Bobby McCarty won the race in a photo finish over Tyler Matthews, with Sam Butler, Deac McCaskill and Daniel Silvestri the remainder of the top five. Jonathan Findley ran sixth, with Mini Tyrell seventh ahead of Cox, Kaden Honeycutt and Justin Johnson.

“We learned a lot this weekend and I know what I need to work on next going forward. Thanks to JR Motorsports for a great Capital Chevrolet/Sokal Media Group Chevrolet Camaro tonight. Our next CARS Tour race will be at Orange County Speedway on April 25.”
